Malaria is an easily preventable and treatable illness. Unfortunately, in Uganda it is all too often fatal, especially for children. Malaria is the number one killer of children in Uganda, aside from neonatal deaths, and tens of thousands of children die from malaria each year. At the NUMEM clinic in northern Uganda, malaria is the #1 diagnosis. This past year, nearly 3,400 individuals were treated for malaria at the clinic, the majority of them children. It costs less than $5 to diagnose and to provide life-saving treatment to a child with malaria.
